Hydrogen as fuel

Ships are a good place to start in the development of a hydrogen economy aimed at achieving long-term emissions reductions. The global shipbuilding sector should seek growth opportunities from the offshore industry, according to Oh Kong-gyun, chairman and CEO of the Korean Register.

Speaking at the recent 4th Seoul International Shipbuilding and Maritime Conference in South Korea, Oh explained that while the world fleet is continuing to grow, the number of new orders decreased within the period 2006-09.

‘Ambiorix’ dredger launched

The self-propelled cutter suction dredger ‘Ambiorix’ was launched on October 28 at the IHC Merwede shipyard in Hardinxveld-Giessendam, Netherlands.

Namura shipbuilding delivers ore carrier

‘Wugang Innovation’, a new ore carrier built by Namura Shipbuilding was delivered to NYK on October 28. The ship is a Wozmax ore carrier, built to carry the maximum loading capacity allowed at ports in Western Australia, an area that has design limitations on the load draught of ships transporting ore.

Shipbroker SSY SSY Consultancy and Research have forecast that deliveries of new dry bulk ships are on course to reach their highest level ever this year and fleet expansion is expected to remain strong in 2012, reports Reuters.

Sinopacific delivers OSVs to Neptune Offshore

Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group held ship-naming and delivery ceremony on Wednesday at its Zhejiang shipyard for the offshore support vessels (OSVs) ‘Neptune Despina’ and ‘Neptune Larissa’ built for Neptune Offshore.

Noreq, Norway, has announced the award of several major contracts with Asian yards. The total value of the contracts signed in recent weeks, including optional vessels, will exceed US$15 million.

Figures published by the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) reveal that globally there was a reduction in offshore diving work in 2010, compared with 2009.

WorleyParsons has been awarded a contract to provide procurement and construction management services for the first stage of the development of the new Wiggins Island Coal Export Terminal, near Gladstone in Queensland. Mitsui OSK Lines has announced a revision of its consolidated business outlook for the first half of the 2011 financial year. MOL said it now expects a net loss for the first half, having previously forecast a US$13 million profit.
