Armed guards to fight pirates

Spain’s Ministry of Defence has authorized the use of large calibre weapons, up to 12.70 millimetres, on board tuna vessels fishing in the Indian Ocean to combat pirates. The measure was announced by Defence Minister Carme Chacón after meeting with representatives of tuna vessels and shipowners of the Spanish fleet in the Indian Ocean.

The Australian Fisheries Management Authority (AFMA) has announced that from November 1 it will be taking a zero-tolerance approach to Commonwealth-endorsed commercial fishing vessel operators who fail to have a properly maintained vessel monitoring system (VMS) unit operating at all times. The European Commission (EC) has presented its first proposal on fishing allowances for 2012 for certain fish stocks in the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea.
