Boskalis wins major port contract in Brazil

Royal Boskalis Westminster has won a contract for the construction of a new port terminal, TX2, at Superporto do Açu in Brazil.

The site of Sydney Ports Corporation’s new container terminal at Port Botany, New South Wales, was yesterday handed over to Hutchison Port Holdings for operator works.

Evergreen launches new container service

Taiwan’s Evergreen Line has launched a new weekly feeder service between Kaohsiung in Taiwan and Cebu in the Philippines.

Mitsui OSK Lines has upgraded its Asia-East Coast South America service. Over the course of 2011 and 2012, MOL will launch a total of ten new 5,600TEU containerships that will replace current vessels on the CSW.

RINA criticises recent bulker losses

Classification society RINA has criticised recent losses of dry-bulk cargo carriers, arguing that the ships were not designed and built to carry fine ores that may take on moisture.

The dry bulk freight market is not expected to register a stellar performance this year. Freight rates are expected to remain depressed through to 2012, unless the recent surge in scrapping is maintained.

Exmar and BW Gas in vessel swap

Exmar and BW Gas have reached an agreement to swap two of Exmar’s VLGCs for a number of ships from BW Gas’s midsize fleet.

Cosco Zhoushan Shipyard has delivered the bulk carrier ‘Sofia’ to its European buyer. The delivery documents were signed on July 13.

Bulk carrier sinks in Yellow Sea

Chinese bulk carrier ‘Xin Chen Hui 9’ sank on July 14 following a collision with the containership ‘Cosco Fukuyama’ in the Yellow Sea, according to Dolphin Maritime.

Bahamian shipowners Campbell Shipping on Friday signed an order with Tsuji Heavy Industries for two 37,500DWT double-hull log fitted bulk carriers, with an option for two more.

MHI unveils new LNG carrier design

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has completed development of a new-generation LNG carrier.

Despite record crude oil liftings from the Middle East and anticipated demand growth of around two percent for 2011, there remains a persistent oversupply of VLCC tonnage, according to analysis by Braemar Shipping Services.

Hanjin lands orders for 56 ships

Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction-Philippines has won contracts worth a total of US$4.8 billion for the construction of 56 vessels, including 36 bulk carriers.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has completed the modernisation of the shipbuilding facility at the Enoura plant of its Shimonoseki shipyard in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.

Diamond Offshore reports rise

Diamond Offshore Drilling has reported net income for the second quarter of 2011 of US$266.6 million, compared with US$224.4 million in the same period a year earlier.

Offshore Ship Designers has been chosen to design six new fuel-efficient seismic support/chase vessels for French offshore major Bourbon, to be built at Dubai’s Grandweld Shipyards.
