Maritime Piracy
At the beginning of August, to very little fanfare, three of the world’s largest flag states signed an agreement condemning acts of violence against seafarers by pirates. The “Washington Declaration” saw the flag states agree to pool information on the mistreatment of seafarers at the hands of pirates and recognized that the increasing use of violence against captured seafarers is under-reported by the media.
While leaders of the biggest European countries were late last month dithering over the eurozone financial crisis and the political deadlock continued in Washington (DC) over ways of reducing the US’s mountainous debt, a meeting in Miami produced an agreement, on seafarers’ pay.
Fincantieri to build Italy’s largest cruise ship
Costa Cruises has commissioned Italian builder Fincantieri to build the largest cruise ship to be constructed in Italy. The ship will have a gross tonnage of 132,500 tonnes with 1,854 cabins, and can accommodate 4,928 guests.
German operator Flensburger Förde Reederei Seetouristik on September 16 will take over the ferry service run by Mols-Linien between Aarhus and Kalundborg in Denmark.
Operations doubled at Dubai Maritime City
The Industrial District of Dubai Maritime City, the purpose-built enclosure for maritime-related businesses adjacent to Port Rashid in the UAE, has reported a two-fold increase in number of operations from last year, at the half-year mark of 2011.

Zhejian completes delivery of ‘Bourbon Front’
Zhejiang Shipbuilding, an affiliate to Sinopacific Shipbuilding Group, August 9 completed the delivery of ‘Bourbon Front’, the first of four Ulstein PX105 platform supply vessels built for Bourbon Offshore Norway.
STX Finland’s Turku Shipyard yesterday started production of a multipurpose deck cargo vessel ordered by Gaiamare. The vessel, known as ‘NB 1379’ is an environmentally friendly specialised ship that will be delivered in the first half 2012.
Davao Port
Davao Integrated Port and Stevedoring Services , a unit of International Container Terminal Services, handled more than 100,000TEU via the Sasa Wharf at the Port of Davao, southern Philippines, in the first quarter of the year.

‘Seaspan Eagle’ sets off for Vancouver
The ASD tug ‘Seaspan Eagle’ left the port of Tuzla, Turkey, on July 15, at the start of a two-month voyage to its destination port Vancouver, Canada. The ‘Seaspan Eagle’ is the second tug that Transport and Offshore Services has delivered for Seaspan International, following a first one – ‘Seaspan Raven’ – that arrived on January 4.
US-based Blessey Marine has completed the delivery of two of its 2000 HP Class towboats. The ‘Steve Scalise’ was built at the Verret Shipyard in Plaquemine, Louisiana, to a design by the shipyard.
Drydocks World delivers seismic vessel
Drydocks World has delivered seismic vessel ‘Polarcus Selma’ to its owner, Dubai-based geophysical services company Polarcus.
Police in New South Wales, Australia, have launched an investigation following an incident involving a ferry and small boat near Ettalong Beach on the state’s central coast.
COSCO delivers shuttle tanker ‘Recife Knutsen’
COSCO (Nantong) Shipyard has delivered a second shuttle tanker ‘Recife Knutsen’ for Norwegian owner Knutsen Oas Shipping. The 105,000DWT vessel measures 246.8 metres in length overall, 42 metres in breath and 22.5 metres in depth.

Water sampling effort to fight fracking
The governor of Colorado on Tuesday announced a joint program between the state and the oil and natural gas industry to collect groundwater samples before and after hydraulic fracturing operations, to test whether they are harmful to the environment.
