Iran’s oil sanctions

UK-based law firm Whale Rock Legal is advising all companies who import to or export from Iran that sanctions have been imposed on one of its main providers of port services, placing significant further restrictions on trade with the Persian Gulf nation.

German stevedoring firm HHLA is introducing self-service check-in systems at its Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA) in Hamburg, in a bid to cut waiting times and achieve faster processing.

Brodosplit wins heavy lift ship order

Brodosplit Shipyard in Split, Croatia, has won an order for the construction of a heavy lift vessel for Jumbo Shipping. The new vessel will have a length of 152.60 metres and a beam of 27.40 metres and is equipped with a pair of 1,100-tonne cranes. In tandem, the cranes can lift up to 2,200 tonnes which would make it the strongest heavy lift vessel in the world.

COSCO Corporation has delivered two new bulk carriers to undisclosed Asian buyers. Both vessels are 57,000DWT bulk carriers measuring 189.99 metres in length overall and 32.26 metres in breadth.

Hamburg Süd ‘Santa Rita’

Germany’s Hamburg Süd yesterday christened the container ship ‘Santa Rita’ in Sepetiba, Brazil. The ‘Santa Rita’ is the third newbuilding of a series of ten identical container vessels each featuring a slot capacity of 7,100TEU and fitted with 1,600 reefer container plugs.

Pacific Direct Line (PDL) has replaced the 13,000DWT ‘Southern Lily’ with the 19,000DWT ‘Southern Lily II’ on its New Zealand-Fiji-Samoa-American Samoa-Tonga schedule.

Foster Wheeler AG’s subsidiary, Global Engineering and Construction Group, entered into a joint venture agreement with The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) in the Republic of Azerbaijan.

UK desperately needs a new energy strategy based on a realistic assessment of its assets, its needs and the options available to it. Unfortunately, its freedom for technical and financial manoeuvre is deeply restricted by its self-imposed Climate Change Act and its commitment to the EU’s 20-20-20 targets.

BHP Billiton has announced that it has purchased PetroHawk. This $12.1 billion deal created a 62.49% move upward in PetroHawk’s market cap. Its no secret that BHP has been trying to put its cash to work, but this deal provided more upside than expected.

Suez Canal continues operations despite protests

Egyptian officials have stated that the Suez Canal is operating normally despite continued protests in the area, reports Reuters. On Saturday around 1,000 people blocked the main road from the city of Suez to the canal and nearby Tawfik port in protest.

NYK Lines

NYK Line and Tokyo LNG Tanker, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tokyo Gas, yesterday held a naming ceremony for ‘Energy Horizon’, their jointly owned LNG carrier. The vessel is currently being built at the Sakaide Shipyard of the Kawasaki Heavy Industries.

Zelenodolsk Shipyard has laid down the second oil tanker of Project RST25, project designer Marine Engineering Bureau said. The series of two mixed river/sea-going tankers (plus three options) was ordered by Nafta-Invest.

CMA CGM to launch a new service route

CMA CGM Group will launch a new service connecting Asia, Fiji and New Zealand on July 18. Named ANZEX, the new weekly service will deploy seven 1,800TEU ships. The service rotation will be as follows: Port Kelang, Chiwan, Shangai, Pusan, Suva, Auckland, Port Chalmers, Lyttelton, Tauranga, Noumea and back to Port Kelang.

General Maritime Corporation announced yesterday that it has agreed to enter seven of its VLCCs into Seawolf Tankers, a commercial pool of VLCCs managed by Heidmar. Under the agreement, the ‘Genmar Vision’, ‘Genmar Zeus’ and ‘Genmar Ulysses’ will begin trading in the pool within the next 30 days.

Excess liquidity pumps market

It was an excellent week for the world stock markets. France (up 5.9%) led the gains in the developed markets. Amongst the Asian pack, India led, with gains of 2.9% during the week. Approval of austerity measures by Greece and jump in the manufacturing data fuelled positive sentiments in the US stock markets.

Chariot Oil and Gas

Chariot Oil & Gas, the Namibia-focus oil and gas explorer announced it has signed heads of terms agreements for two of its offshore license areas. Discussions with regards to a third license area are continuing.

Colorado’s oil and gas regulators are volunteering to have an outside group review the state’s rules on fracking, an extraction method that some people worry could taint drinking water supplies.
