Petrol price rises in India yet again

With petrol prices up nearly 9% and diesel rates poised to rise, state-run Indian oil Corporation is preparing plans to revitalise its upstream business and hive it off into a subsidiary, as India’s biggest refiner and fuel retailer turns to its growth strategy after struggling with low fuel state-set fuel prices for months.

Following the Defence Ministry objections over explorations in the oil and gas blocks in Krishna-Goadavari basin, as some of them lie between two proposed defence establishments, uncertainty is looming large on the further offering of blocks in the basin. Spread over 50,000 sq kms in the east coast of India, the KG-Basin is estimated to have gas reserves up to 14 trillion cubic feet.

Repsol oil

Spain’s biggest oil company, said first-quarter profit rose 29 percent, beating analyst estimates, after crude prices climbed and earnings increased at its liquefied natural gas unit.

When oil and gas companies developed the technology to pump water, chemicals and sand into the ground to fracture rock and release hydrocarbons, they called it “hydraulic fracturing.”

Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding

Mitsui Engineering and Shipbuilding recently completed the 110,000DWT bulk carrier ‘Nord Hercules’ which had been under construction at its Chiba Works, and delivered her to her owner, Clio Marine of Liberia on January 21, 2011.

Deltamarin has signed an agreement with Nantong Mingde Heavy Industry for the design of seven new Equinox-class self unloading and gearless bulk carriers to be built at the Chinese yard for shipping firm Algoma Central Corporation and the Canadian Wheat Board.

Exxon Mobil

Indonesian state energy firm PT Pertamina is in talks with Exxon Mobil Corp. to buy its 25% stake in an oil-exploration project in Angola after bidding around $3.5 billion.

New York State’s pension fund is made up of diversified investments, some of which are in energy companies. As WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Greg Fry reports, the investments are in companies that are growing due in part to gas drilling operations, which some are trying to stop from being established in New York.

SOLAS to suppress piracy

UK and US maritime lawyer and maritime author Dr John Cartner is calling on the International Maritime Organisation to enact changes to the Safety at Life at Sea Convention to combat the continuing problem of piracy facing the global merchant fleet by allowing ships to carry armed guards.

The governments of Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Botswana have initialled a memorandum of understanding on the implementation of a tripartite project to develop a deep-water port at Techobanine, in Mozambique’s southernmost district of Matutuine.
