Mærsk expecting a $ 5 billion result in 2010

Revenue for the period increased by 17% to 41.4 billion USD primarily as a result of higher freight rates for the Group’s container shipping activities and higher oil prices. The net result for the period was a profit of 4.2 billion USD (a loss of USD 0.7 billion). “The result is exceptional, and we are very satisfied.

Global container shipping rates have fallen for the 18th consecutive week, as there is an “abundance” of capacity on the Asia-Europe and Asia-US trade lanes. The overall weekly index for container rates on services from Shanghai slipped 1.4% last week, compared with two weeks ago, to reach 1,242.87.

Evergreen Marine Corporation recorded 382.72 million US$ in after-tax earnings, which actually works out to 0.12 US$ in earnings per share, in the first three quarters of this year, exceeding its earnings posted in 2009. The company will likely challenge the highest earnings recorded in the peak 2005.

Arrival of the first ship to the new Khalifa Port

Abu Dhabi Ports Company and Emirates Aluminium welcomed the first shipment of
alumina to the new purpose built EMAL wharf at Khalifa Port in Taweelah today. The first phase of the port, scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2012 is operated by Abu Dhabi Ports Company.

The Wall Street Journal reported late Tuesday that Pride is evaluating strategic options that could include a possible sale and has held discussions with Norway’s Seadrill Ltd. and London based Ensco PLC among other possible suitors. A Pride spokeswoman wasn’t immediately available to comment.

Robert Allan unveils powerful tug

Solent Towage of Southampton, UK, a division of Norwegian company Østensjø Rederi, recently took delivery of their latest tug from Astilleros Gondan. The ‘Vortex’ is designated as an AVT 37/80 Class, and is the latest of the AVT series of Voith-powered escort tug designs from Robert Allan naval architects of Vancouver, Canada.

The United Kingdom Chamber of Shipping has established a specialist Harbour Towage Panel to foster closer working with the British Tugowners Association.The new panel will be the foremost industry forum for the development of policy on all port towage issues.

Tebma Shipyards has delivered two 45-tonne bollard pull tugs in to the Cochin Port Trust in south India. Both tugs were designed in house and built to IRS classifications. Each tug measures 32 metres by 10.65 metres and 5.04 metres draft.

Dutch ports to reward clean ships

As of 1 January 2011, the ports of Amsterdam, Moerdijk, Dordrecht and Rotterdam will be rewarding clean ocean-going vessels with discounts on their port dues. This involves vessels which score well on the Environmental Ship Index.

The topic of using gas as a ship fuel attracted a large audience in Hamburg this week, underlining that the maritime industry perceives this technology as one of the most promising to meet future emission and profitability challenges.

Swedish Transatlantic has secured a four-year charter contract with ENI Norway for the AHTS Njord Viking currently under construction at the Spanish shipbuilder Astilleros Zamakona – the contract is worth 52.3 million EUROS.
