Ship Collision in West Bengal, India
A cargo vessel bound for Kolkata rammed into the belly of another ship moving in the opposite direction near Nurpur in South 24-Parganas on Tuesday morning. Both container ships MV Tiger Spring and MV Green Valley were damaged, but there was no loss of life, said Kolkata Port Trust officials. Had the river pilot on one of the vessels not taken immediate action and shifted it to a sandbank near the shore, the ship may have sunk, blocking the sole navigation channel that connects Kolkata Dock System with Sandheads.
From one collision to another.. A Sydney ferry and a speedboat collision on Parramatta River has resulted in injuries to all six of the speedboat passengers. The accident occurred at Meadowbank Wharf at about 4.35pm on October 7 when a ferry and a speedboat collided about 100 metres from the shore.
The death toll from an Indian ferry accident has risen to eighteen. A ferry that only had capacity for 60 was carrying 150 people across Murigangan River outside of Kolkata in India’s West Bengal state.
Boskalis wins EUR 100 million worth of contracts in Africa
Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. has been awarded three contracts on the African subcontinent with a total value of approximately € 100 million. The largest contract was awarded in Nigeria by Saipem and involves dredging and equipment maintenance support work for an operational oil facility. Two other recently awarded projects located in Morocco and the Republic of the Congo are port-related. Nigeria, refurbishment of water station Boskalis has been awarded a contract by Saipem Contracting Nigeria Limited in the Olero Creek in Delta State, about 200 kilometers northwest of Port Harcourt.
Companies have still some six weeks left to express their formal interest to develop the Tank terminal Europoort West in the port of Rotterdam. The plot of land available for the terminal, 36 hectare is the only large site with direct deep-water access, up to approximately 20 meters, still available in the existing port and industrial complex.
Abu Dhabi National Oil Company has awarded the development of Das Island reclamation and shore protection contract to Van Oord. The contract value amounts to 200 million Euros. Execution of the project will start at end of October and is scheduled for completion in December 2011.
Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding profits soar
Abu Dhabi Ship Building , the emirate’s supplier of naval and commercial vessels, doubled its profits in the most recent quarter as it attracted new contracts from navies around the Gulf. Net profits rose to US$13 million led by a 36.8 per cent increase in revenues from new contracts to $118m. Riad Kahwaji, the chief executive of the Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis, said ADSB had established itself as a strong regional competitor in recent years, attracting contracts from a number of Gulf navies, including Oman, Bahrain and Qatar.
Drydocks World announced the launch of the highly versatile, self-contained jack-up construction vessel, Nora, at its Graha shipyard in Indonesia. The self-propelled vessel Nora was built for Master Marine ASA of Norway It was designed by Global Maritime, and classified by the American Bureau of Shipping, Nora is 111.8 m long and capable of carrying up to 260 people.
The government yesterday approved amendments to over 50-year-old merchant shipping Act to bring rules in line with the international convention for removal of wrecks, as India will be acceding to the convention soon. “The Cabinet yesterday approved the proposal to accede to the Nairobi International Convention on the Removal of Wrecks, 2007, and to proceed with the amendments to the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958, which will become necessary, consequent to the accession of the said Convention,” an official spokesperson said.
ONGC is Asia’s top oil firm.
ONGC has pipped China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) to become Asia’s top oil and gas exploration and production company, as per Platts Top 250 Global Energy Company Rankings announced in Singapore yesterday. In the rankings, that rated world’s leading oil and gas, power and coal firms, ONGC climbed to 18th slot from 26th position in 2009 rankings. Besides, ONGC (Oil and Natural Gas Corporation), Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), National Thermal Power Corporation and Gas Authority of India Limited have been ranked as the number 1 companies in Asia in their respective industries.
Federal land managers say the sale of oil and gas rights on 94 parcels in Wyoming netted nearly $14 million. The Bureau of Land Management sale took place Tuesday. The BLM says the state of Wyoming will get almost half of the bids and rental receipts.
layton Williams Energy Inc. on Wednesday said it earned $11.6 million in the third quarter after posting a loss a year ago. The Texas oil and gas company reported income amounted to 96 cents a share for the three-months ended Sept. 30.

Talisman Energy’s share price jumped sharply Tuesday after the Calgary-based oil and gas producer said higher production from its U.S. shale gas plays resulted in a fourfold increase in third quarter profits. The Calgary-based oil and gas producer said its net income jumped to $121 million compared to $30 million a year earlier on the back of a 12 per cent increase in production.
A consortium of India’s top state-run energy firms, led by exploration giant Oil and Natural Gas Corp. is in talks to acquire a 25% stake in Australia’s Advent Energy for around $1 billion, two officials with direct knowledge of the negotiations said.
Vinson & Elkins is advising Douglas Miller, chairman and CEO of Exco Resources, who has teamed up with T. Boone Pickens and two private equity firms to launch a $4.36 billion takeover bid for Dallas-based Exco. Jeffrey Chapman, an M&A partner in Vinson’s Dallas office, has taken the lead representing Miller on his potential Exco acquisition. Chapman, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment, is also currently representing Dallas-based 7-Eleven on a roughly $2 billion hostile bid for Casey’s General Stores, an Iowa-based chain.
RAK Petroleum Orders Wave Piercer Vessel
RAK Petroleum has chartered the first Topaz Wave Piercer for use in the Gulf, the Company announced today. Designed by Incat Holdings Limited of Australia and built by Topaz Marine based in Dubai, the long-term charter vessel will be used for production crews commuting to and from the Company’s offshore Oman platforms.
Lundin Petroleum says that drilling of exploration well 3/8-1 on the Barchan prospect has commenced. The well is located in licence PL400 in the Norwegian North Sea. PL400 is located some 12 km east of the Trym Discovery in the Southern North Sea, close to the boundary between the Norwegian and Danish sectors.
India is encouraging state-run oil companies to acquire oil and gas assets abroad as demand in the energy-hungry country is rapidly outpacing domestic supply, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Monday.
India keen to invest in Sudan’s oil projects
India and Sudan on Saturday expressed their desire to expand their cooperation in the oil and gas sector. The two countries, following a bilateral meet held today, decided to engage their oil companies in greater discussions during the International Conference Petrotech-2010.
Meeting market estimates, Reliance Industries (RIL) posted a 27.8 per cent rise in net profit during the quarter ended September 2010 on rising revenues from refining and oil and gas production. Net profit for the July-September quarter was Rs 4,923 crore, up from Rs 3,852 crore in the year-ago period.
Price of Petrol set to rise.
The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) increased prices of petroleum products on Sunday by a massive Rs4.27 to Rs7.11 per litre or up to 9 per cent with immediate effect to offset impact of the rise in oil prices in the international market.

Oil & gas drilling up 60 per cent
Improvements this year in oil and gas drilling activity should carry over into 2011, the Canadian Association of Oilwell Drilling Contractors (CAODC) said Tuesday. The first three-quarters of 2010 saw a 60-per-cent improvement over 2009, but were still 14 per cent below the same months of 2008, and significantly under the 2006 mark. There were 83,359 operating days for the period this year, up from 51,993 in 2009.
The U.S. Geological Survey said Tuesday that Alaska holds less oil and natural gas onshore at the National Petroleum Reserve and in nearby state waters than previously thought. The agency now estimates that the area, on and near land in Alaska’s North Slope owned by the U.S. government, holds 896 million barrels of conventional, undiscovered oil, about 10% of the amount the agency predicted was there in 2002.
Russia’s largest oil producer, Rosneft said on Tuesday that the company may participate in oil, gas and refining projects in Ecuador. The firm’s head, Eduard Khudainatov, discussed Rosneft’s participation in Ecuador’s oil and gas sector with Jorge Glas, the South American country’s Minister of Strategic Resources and its Ambassador to Russia.
Oil and gas company BP has announced that it has reached an agreement to sell its recently acquired interests in four mature producing deepwater oil and gas fields in the US Gulf of Mexico to Japanese company Marubeni Oil and Gas for $650m.
